The signet ring is a classic item of jewellery and has played an important part throughout history.
Originating from the Latin word ‘signum’ meaning ‘sign’, signet rings were deeply engraved (seal engraved signet rings) with a family crest and used as a seal. The head was pressed into hot wax to provide an inprint and this was often the most authentic way of signing a document, (even more so than a fingerprint!) with the ring being disposed of after the person passed.
Today, a signet ring is often frequently passed down within a family line from member to member.
Signet rings today are often engraved with the owners initials monogrammed together as a signet ring with initials and are often worn on the pinky finger of the non-dominant hand however, they can be worn on any finger by men and women of all ages.
