The signet ring is a classic piece of jewelry and has played an important part throughout history. Originating from the Latin word ‘signum’ which means ‘sign’, they were often deeply engraved (seal engraved) with a personal family crest and used by many as a seal.

The seal signing involved pressing the head of the ring into hot wax which would provide an inprint on letters or also, legal documents. Signet ring seals were historically known to be the most authentic way of signing a document, (even more so than a fingerprint!) with the ring being disposed of after the person passed.

Today however, they are frequently passed down within a family line from member to member so seen as a family heirloom for generations to come.

Gold signet rings today are often engraved with the owners initials monogrammed together and often worn on the pinky finger of the non-dominant hand however, they can be worn on any finger by men and women of all ages.
