Silver Vesta Cases | Pre-Owned | Dated 1916

Silver vesta cases, such as this beautiful pre-owned one, were very popular throughout history. Pre-owned and dated (via the hallmark) 1916, this case is now a collectors item. Made from Sterling Silver, it has a wave ridge pattern, a hinged cover, a striker base and a ring loop if needed for suspension from a chain.

Silver vesta cases are small boxes or protective cases, made from Silver, which hold a number of friction matches (“strike anywhere” matches) – after the introduction of friction matches, a case was needed to prevent them from getting damp and to protect the user from any danger incase of spontaneous ignition! Matches were used for smoking in the later nineteenth and early twentieth century. These cases are named after the Roman goddess of fire and earth “Vesta” and became a very popular item to own by the early 20^th Century.

The vesta case features a dedicated match striker surface at the bottom and a ring at the side so it can be suspended from a fob or albert chain or worn as a pendant if desired,
