A signet ring is a timeless classic piece of jewelry and has played an important part throughout history. Originating from the Latin word ‘signum’ which means ‘sign’, signet rings were often used with a seal engraving on the head with a personal family crest and used by the owner exclusively as a seal. This involved pressing the head of the ring which included the deep engraving into hot wax which would provide an inprint on letters or also, legal documents. Signet ring seals were historically known to be the most authentic way of signing a document, (even more so than a fingerprint!) with the rings being disposed of after the person passed. Today however, they are frequently passed down within a family line from member to member.
Signet rings are often worn on the pinky finger of the non-dominant hand however, they can be worn on any finger by men and women of all ages.
